Roanoke, VA - John David Slemons, known lovingly as John, was born on January 18, 1931, in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Ralph and Virona Slemons, and passed away on August 6, 2026, in Roanoke, Virginia, after a long illness.

He lived a life marked by devotion to his family, faithful service to his country, and a quiet Christian spirit that touched all who knew him.

John was a man of intelligence, strength, and warmth, and those closest to him knew him as interesting, loving, and steadfast. He carried himself with dignity and purpose, and he met the seasons of life with courage and grace. His faith in God was an important part of his life, and his example reflected the values of kindness, responsibility, and perseverance.

He served his nation honorably in the United States Army for 22 years, including service during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. His military career took him to many places, and he traveled extensively throughout those years, gaining experiences that broadened his perspective and shaped the man he became.

After retiring from the military, he continued to serve with dedication for 24 years as an administrative assistant for the United States Government. His long career was a testament to his work ethic, loyalty, and sense of duty.

John made his home in Roanoke, Virginia, for 21 years, and he also lived in Ocala, Florida, after moving there in October of 1993. Wherever he lived, he built relationships that lasted and left behind memories that will be cherished. He was a steady presence in the lives of his loved ones, and he was respected by friends, neighbors, and colleagues for his quiet wisdom and dependable nature. John had a generous spirit and supported numerous charities.

In addition to his parents John is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Norma Lee Slemons, a son David Slemons, as well as his sister, Elsie Longwell, and his brothers, Samuel Slemons and Peter Slemons. Their memories remained dear to him throughout his life, and now they are reunited in the presence of the Lord.

In times of grief, John trusted in God's promise of eternal life, and that faith sustained him through many of life's trials.

He is survived by his three daughters, Linda Sutphin and her husband Richard of Christiansburg, Virginia, Deborah Conway and her husband Daniel of Roanoke, Virginia, and Rhonda Garman and her husband Kerry of Catawba, Virginia. He also leaves behind two stepdaughters, Cindy Thompson and her husband Ralph of Mount Peiler, Virginia, and Karen Henley of Ashland, Virginia, along with five grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, multiple nieces and nephews, and other extended family members and friends. Each of them carries forward a part of his legacy through the love, guidance, and memories he shared so generously.

John's life was one of faithful service and enduring love. He honored his family, served his country, and lived with a Christian heart that sought to do what was right.

Though his earthly journey has come to an end, his memory will remain a blessing to those who knew and loved him. His loved ones take comfort in the assurance that he is now at peace in the presence of his Savior, where there is no more pain, no more sorrow, and no more suffering.

May the Lord grant comfort to all who mourn his passing and strength to those who carry his memory forward. John David Slemons will be remembered with gratitude, affection, and respect, and his life will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know him.

A graveside service will take place for John on Tuesday August 11, 2026, at 1:00pm in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Entombment will follow.
