Gerald William Godfrey
Gerald "Jerry" W. Godfrey of Shady Spring, WV, went to be with the Lord on January 6, 2020 in Beckley, WV at the age of 74.
Jerry was a very proud and loving grandfather that was always giving of his time and energy. He greatly loved playing his harmonica and was a lively piano player. Many knew him from his portrayal of General Alfred Beckley at the Wildwood House in Beckley, WV. He was a founding member of the John Beckley Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and served as their Chapter Treasurer and Historian. He also found great joy in researching his family history. Jerry enjoyed taking people rappelling and white water rafting. He built floats for the church and other organizations over the past four decades. He was passionate about West Virginia and American History, often acting as a tour guide, showing others the beauty and wonders of West Virginia. He was often seen around the state at historical events wearing his top hat and overcoat. He was an active, dedicated and lifelong member of the Church of God and worshipped at the Family Worship Center.
Jerry was born on July 13, 1945 in Clarksburg, WV. He graduated from Liberty High School in Clarksburg, WV in 1963. He then studied business law at WVU Tech and began his career as a civil servant for the United States Postal Service - retiring as a Postmaster after 36 years of dedicated service. Over the years, Jerry welcomed many foreign exchange students and several children into the family home. He enjoyed teaching and sharing many wonderful experiences with them.
Jerry is survived by three children: Christopher B. Godfrey (Tanya) of Charles Town, WV, Shawn M. Godfrey (Shonna), of Red House, WV and Marcy S. Godfrey, of Shady Spring, WV. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Iva Godfrey Abramowski of Myrtle Beach, SC. Additionally, he is survived by his siblings: Joyce Beverlin, Lula Belle Maxwell and Zelphia Meadows, of Clarksburg, WV and Richard Godfrey, of Sardis, WV; numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and extended family. Jerry will be fondly remembered by his four grandchildren Isaiah, Alyssa, Jeremiah and Dillon, who affectionately called him "Pappy". He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Archie A. and Mary A. Estep Godfrey of Clarksburg, WV, his infant brother Ronald Lee Godfrey of Clarksburg, WV, his brother Ronald Lynn Godfrey, of Clarksburg, WV, his brother Robert Godfrey of Raleigh, NC, and his sister Carolyn Sue Kittle Schultz of Harrisonburg, PA.
Friends are invited to share their memories of Jerry with his family during visitation at the Family Worship Center, located at 224 Pinewood Drive, Beckley, WV 25801 on Saturday, January 18, 2020 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. The funeral service will be held at the Family Worship Center on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Goodbye to a cousin who shared genealogy with me. I recently sent Jerry a notebook of pictures of his family at a reunion years ago. Jerry enjoyed seeing pictures of his parents and siblings and was so happy to receive it. I will miss all the emails we sent to each other. Rest in peace, Jerry. My email address: bus334@comcast.net
