Carole Marie Scaring Obituary
Wildwood, MO - Carole Marie (née Sullivan) Scaring, 86, was baptized into the hope of Christ's resurrection,
Tuesday, January 20, 2026, while in the care of family and hospice near Saint Louis, Missouri, after a short illness.
She was born in Saint Louis, a daughter of the late Eugene and Annabelle (née McCluskey) Sullivan.
Carole graduated from St Margaret of Scotland Catholic school, Mercy High School, and Fontbonne College in Saint Louis.
She was a retired Physical Education and Biology teacher and a member of Most Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eureka, MO and Saint Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Beckley, WV. Carole had many friends and family in Saint Louis and many friends in Beckley.
She was the beloved wife of Dr. William Anthony (Bill) Scaring, a long-time Obstetrician and
Gynecologist, practicing with Associates in OB/GYN and at Raleigh General Hospital in
Beckley, and serving as a retired Captain in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps (active and reserve).
Carole met Bill in Saint Louis while he was in medical school. During the Vietnam War, the Navy took them to the Republic of the Philippines (where she taught at a Defense Department school and raised their oldest two children), then to Virginia and Washington State before they settled for several years of private practice and life in the south Chicago suburbs. They moved to Beckley in 1987. They had many wonderful years together in West Virginia.
After Dr. Scaring passed in 2008, Carole split each year between Saint Louis and Beckley.
Often described as the Energizer Bunny, Carole practiced an active life. She served as legislative chair and president of the Raleigh County Medical Society Auxiliary and later president of the West Virginia Medical Alliance. Carole helped to lead successful campaigns for tobacco control, as part of her advocacy for healthier, longer lives for West Virginians. Mrs. Scaring supported pro-life, pro-mother movements in Beckley and across the country, and was also an active member of her parish at Saint Francis de Sales. She volunteered as a substitute teacher and reading buddy for young children in Beckley and Shady Springs schools.
Carole had many friends in the Woodcrest (Beckley) and Glade Springs (Daniels) communities where she and Bill lived. She remained active in two book clubs, Bible study, a mahjong club, and enjoyed golf, tennis, pickle ball, and skiing for many years there. She also traveled widely, visiting children and grandchildren in Chicago, Saint Louis, Montgomery (AL), and Warrenton (VA), as well as an occasional trip to Florida, South Carolina, or even overseas with friends, family, or her children and grandchildren. Her youngest granddaughter, Olivia, tagged Carole as her "Tiny Grandma" many years ago, and the name stuck.
She is survived by son William E. (Sarah) Scaring and their children William, Benjamin,
Nicholas, Claire, Lauren, and Olivia; daughter Carole (Robert) Avery and children William,
Luke, Domenica, James, and Ryan; daughter Jennifer (Michael) Stevens and children Drew,Evan, and Matthew; and son Matthew (Michelle) Scaring and children Allison and Taylor; three great-grandchildren, Lucy, Thomas, and Joan; and a sister Ann (late Gene) Keeven, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
Carole was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Patricia, Mary Lee, and Marcia, and brothers Eugene and Jerry.
