Staff Sgt. Willard's Story
Staff Sgt. Willard Thomas Kerr (Tom), age 75, of Beckley, passed away at his home on December 28, 2017 following a long illness.
?Tom is retired from the Beckley Post Office working the night shift as a mail handler and 20 years US Army in the combat engineers. Tom fought for our country courageously in Vietnam from 1967-1968 attaining the rank upon retirement of Staff Sergeant.
?He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Mary Margaret Prince Kerr. He also leaves behind four sons, David Scott Kerr of Arizona, Bryan Thomas Kerr and wife Tammy of Beckley, Jason Michael Kerr and wife Karen of Shady Spring and James Reuben Kerr and fiancé Rachel Walkup of Prosperity; two grandsons, Justin Kerr, and Nicholas Kerr who is also pursuing a career in the United States Army taking after his grandfather. He is also survived by his three granddaughters, Aleigha Kerr of Beckley, Rochelle Kerr of Beckley and Kayla Kerr Monroe and her husband Dustin, of Mullins; great grandson Aiden Jaxon Monroe; sisters, Ruth Wright of Orlando FL, Margaret Walters, Shirley Kerr & Beatrice Campfield, all of Indiana; and brothers, Charlie Kerr of Indiana, and Ernst Kerr of St. Anna Marie Island, FL.
?He is preceded in death by two infant sons, Bryan Scott Kerr and John Thomas Kerr; two brothers, James Robert and Jimmy Kerr; his mother, Eva Lucy B. Kerr; father, Jessie Kerr and step-father, James Orval Kerr.
?Tom enjoyed fishing and guns, his favorite things were keeping up on politics and watching Fox News. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He loved his wife, his family and his country. He will be truly missed by all that knew him.
The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m., Friday afternoon, January 5, 2018 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. with Brother Hibbard Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
