Robert's Story

Robert Ervin Gilkeson, age 71, of Grandview, WV, left his earthly life on Sunday, October 22, 2017.
He was a lifelong resident of Grandview, a faithful member of Grandview Christian Church and a Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War.
Born on August 4, 1946 at Layland, WV, he was the son of the late Bernard Isaac Gilkeson and Evelyn Waddell Gilkeson.
He is survived by his brother Bernard Gilkeson Jr. and wife, Lynda, of Charleston, WV; sisters, Ellen Warden and husband, Danny, of Bristol, Tennessee, Evelyn King and companion, Gene, of Braxton County, WV, and Leslie Warden and husband, Larry, of Rural Retreat, Virginia. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Robert was one of this world's truly good people. At family gatherings, the most often-heard phrase was "Uncle Robert"! He enjoyed camping, boating, skiing and more recently, bicycling the Greenbrier River Trail from his camp on the Greenbrier River. He was his family's hero as the compassionate sole caregiver for his mother during the last several years of her life. He gave Mom the best years of her life.
Robert was a man of many interests and talents. He was a collector of model trains and a former pressman for Beckley Newspapers. He was a gifted professional builder and craftsman whose work included building or remodeling homes for each of his siblings. He was active in the Fayette and Raleigh County Genealogical Societies, serving in various roles including president, archivist and editor of the newsletter. He taught genealogy classes in Fayette County Adult Education.
He was named a History Hero by the WV Division of Culture and History and was honored by the WV Legislature for his many contributions including digitizing genealogy records, preserving cemetery records and researching civil war records.
Funeral services for Robert will be conducted at Grandview Christian Church on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at noon with Pastor Russ Jordan officiating, assisted by Pastor Oscar Switzerlette. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery at Grandview, WV. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. The family invites friends to gather for a casual meal at the Grandview Christian Church Fellowship Hall following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Grandview Christian Church are suggested.
