Rachel's Story

Rachel Jane Adkins, age 82, of Meadow Creek, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 13, 2017 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.
Born on July 29, 1935 at Duo, WV, she was the daughter of the late James John Smith and Wilma Blanchard Smith.
Mrs. Adkins was a graduate of Sandstone High School and retired as the County Clerk of Summers County, having worked at the Summers County Courthouse for over 25 years.
Mrs. Adkins was a former member of Meadow Creek Baptist Church and was presently a member of Maxwell Hill Baptist Church in Beckley. She served for many years as a children's Sunday School Teacher and was active in the Silver Saints Ministry of Maxwell Hill Baptist Church.
Affectionately known as "Nannie" by family members and friends, Mrs. Adkins lived her life as a Christian example. "Nannie" loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Even in the final moments of her life, she continued trying to comfort her family as she passed away. Always helping others, Mrs. Adkins had a loving and caring heart along with a forgiving soul. When health permitted, she enjoyed traveling with family members and also going on trips with the Silver Saints of her church.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Adkins was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Theo B. Adkins on July 3, 2008; by brothers, Jay "Codger", George "Buck", and John "Jack" Smith; by a sister, Wilma "Sis" Berry, and by a son-in-law, Wyatt Harris.
Those survivors left to cherish her memory and to continue her legacy, include her daughters, Elaine Harris of Coal City, and Debra Ernest and husband, Don, of Luray, Virginia; a sister, Katherine "Kaky" Daubert of Frederick, Maryland; four grandchildren, Rachel Stover (who was like a daughter) and husband, Rod, of Fairdale, Tarah Kinley and husband, Ray of Sterling, Virginia, Israel Harris and wife, Summer, of China Grove , NC, and Rebekah Mills and husband, Jim, of Coal City; great grandchildren, Luke Stover of Morgantown, Cheyenne Harris of Pax, Ethan Harris of Pax, Ben Harris of China Grove, NC, Canaan Kinley and Holden Kinley of Sterling, Virginia, and Liam Mills of Coal City. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted to Celebrate the Life of Rachel Jane Adkins on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at 2 PM at Maxwell Hill Baptist Church, 301 Teel Road, Beckley, WV, with Pastor Ken Killen officiating. Burial will follow at Restwood Memorial Gardens at Madams Creek, near Hinton, WV. Friends may visit with the family from 6 PM until 8 PM on Saturday at the Maxwell Hill Baptist Church and also one hour prior to the services on Sunday.
Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
