Michael Shane Moody, known to most as "Shane," passed away in his home on Friday, November 17, 2017, of an accidental heroin overdose after a long, brave battle with the disease of addiction. Shane was more than a junkie. He was talented. He was a musician. A thinker. A talented songwriter. A masseuse. A philosopher. A chess player. A martial artist. A lover. A comedian. A fighter. A metal-head. An avid reader. An activist. A father. A son. A friend. A partner. A brother. A light in the lives of many. He was more than another statistic bred out of a forgotten coal-town, as are all deaths spawned from this horrific epidemic. He was a good person, who insisted on leaving everyone he talked to with a smile on their face, or a confused look after an ill-timed, twisted joke. He wanted to help others, and was very open about his battle. Instead of turning a blind eye and forgetting this issue exists, it is important to come together and work to solve it.
Addiction is nuanced. The opioid epidemic affects all of you. It does not discriminate, and is a rapidly growing national health crisis. We, as a nation, are losing our children to this overlooked disease. For those of you that knew him, start thinking about and working toward a solution. Think, talk, pry, and fight for attention for the opioid crisis.
Shane cared about these issues, among many others. He was a raging liberal and proud of his ability to empathize and understand the pain in others. He was a junkie for politics, for music, for philosophy, for laughter, for all the joys of life. He cared about social issues, people, and ideas.
