Laura 'Gennie' Brogan Garten of Figsboro Road, Martinsville, VA, passed away at her home on Friday, October 20, 2017.
Born in Summers County W.Va. on June 5, 1939 to Woodrow Wilson Brogan Sr. and Nina Lilly Brogan. She is preceded in death by brother, Johnny Brogan.
She is survived by three daughters, Lesa Haskins of Fairystone, Va., Patty Fulcher and Rebecca Wallace both of Ridgeway, Va.; four sisters, Jean Farley (late Lemuel Farley), Joyce Lilly (Richard Lilly), Frances Lucas (David Lucas), and Libby Dillard; a brother, Woodrow Brogan Jr.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She started her nursing career at Pinecrest Sanatorium of Beckley, WV, a facility for the treatment of tuberculosis. Her career continued after moving to Virginia as a medical-surgical nurse at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville. Her next career move was to geriatrics where she worked until she retired at the age of 70. Her passion was bedside nursing and was always a patient advocate. She never realized she was the cornerstone of strength and wisdom for her family and her three daughters rock. Her grand children feel she was the best grandmother and no one could fill her shoes. Her unconditional and endless love will never be forgotten.
