James Donald Stone

March 18, 1949 - December 15, 2018

James Donald Stone GRANITE FALLS, NC [ndash] On December 15th 2018 a child of God was healed and received by his heavenly Father. James Donald Stone passed away at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, NC. He was a resident of Granite Falls.
"Jim" was born on March 18th, 1949 in Beckley, WV and was the son of the late Jackey Donald Stone and Gloreen Manning Stone.
He received two associate's degrees from Beckley College. He was an excellent and successful sales associate with Oakwood and Clayton Homes for 40 plus years.
Early in life he became a local legend in Sophia WV with his athletic talents in multiple sports leading Sophia High School to the state finals in basketball in 1967 and was named Raleigh County athlete of the year.
If you had to characterize "Pop" he had a justice mindset of Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird", the dreamer spirit of George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life", the comedic wit of Clark W. Griswold in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" and the hometown heart of Andy Griffith. Bundle them all up and that's who he was. That's how he was beloved by many and that's how he loved many.
He was full of life and lived it passionately. He loved the outdoors and spending time with his family. He never met a stranger and this always served him well in his journey of life.
He was married and survived by the love of his life Carol Lynn Lester Stone. They were crazy for one another from day one until the end. They spent 45 years together raising 2 children and helping to raise 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Other surviving members include James Stone II and his wife Heather, Tara Franckhauser and her husband John of Granite Falls, NC. He was "Poppy" to 5 surviving grandchildren as follows: Rhyan Stone, Ella Franckhauser and fiancé John Willis, Samantha Stone, Mia Franckhauser, Nick Franckhauser and great grandchild Nate Willis.
He is also survived by two loving sisters Carmen Rasmussen of Sophia, WV and Karen Whitt and her husband Mike of Lewisburg, WV. Also surviving were many nephews and nieces and more friends than he could count.
Well done "Pop", well done indeed. Every time a bell rings an angel gets their wings. Well ding-ding.
Celebration of Life" services will be at Sophia United Methodist Church in Sophia, WV on January 12th 2019 at 2:30 PM. A reception will follow at the church.

I got to know Jim through employment at Oakwood Homes. I was a Sales Associate and he was the Manager. He was a great manager, leader, and friend, and I always felt like we worked together as a team. Talk about a fair man, he always saw that you were treated fairly made sure you received everything you earned. I know of no one I have respected more than Jim. He made you feel like part of the family.

Jim sure was a family man. Like myself, he thought the world of his family. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't have a priority list like mine. God, family, then job. Which he was a very successful man.

Now, my prayers go out to Carol and family. It is hard to give up someone you love so much.
... But how you are blessed with so much love and so many great memories. God bless and comfort all of you in this time of loss and sorrow.

Grew up with Jim on Dunn Street. Looked up to him as a hero, loved him like a brother. We will miss him dearly at all future Sophia Bluehawks get togethers. But we have comfort in knowing our next reunion will be such a glorious day! Godspeed my friend!
