After an extended illness, Hilda passed peacefully on Monday November 6, 2017 at Harper Mills Nursing Home in Beckley. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Hilda was born March 7, 1922 at Stotesbury, WV, to parents George Thomas Barker and Brida Shumate Barker.
She was a graduate of Mark Twain High School and continued with pride, to attend all the High School reunions until her health declined.
Hilda is preceded in death by her husband, Dorsey T. Keatley Jr.; son Robert J. Keatley; sisters, Helen Rinehart, Maxine Morgan and JoAnn Rezzonico; brothers George T. Barker Jr. William E. Barker, Russell L. Barker and James R. Barker.
Hilda married Dorsey T. (Cotton) Keatley in 1942 and they had two children, Sharon and Robert. They shared 53 years together until his death. eckley has been "Home" for Hilda for 75 years.
Those surviving and remaining to cherish her memory include; daughter Sharon Patton, daughter-in-law Pamela Keatley; grandchildren,; Tonya Patton, Heather Peters, Erin Tucker and Eric (Zephan) Keatley; great-grandchildren, Zachary Heckel, Merideth Tucker, Troy Peters III, Wesley Tucker and Liam Keatley; great-great grandchildren, Gracie, Mally and Emmy. Also surviving are her nieces, nephews, and cousin Felix Shumate.
She was a wonderful homemaker and excellent cook. Her cooking skills were enjoyed by her family and many friends. She used those skills at Institute Elementary School while employed by the Raleigh County Board of Education as a cook, for 11 years.
Hilda was a faithful Christian woman. As a member of Memorial Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir for many years. She was a very sincere witness anytime she had the opportunity to share her testimony. Her faith was a gift to be cherished by all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at 1:00 PM at Melton Mortuary's Chapel, Beckley.
Friends will be received by the family from 11:30 AM until service time. Dr. Charles Bright will be officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family wishes to express great appreciation to the staff at Harper Mills for the professional and compassionate care given to Hilda.
A special request is made that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Memorial Baptist Church.
Arrangements are entrusted to Melton Mortuary & Cremation Center, Beckley, WV.
