Frederick E (Gene) Saunders Jr., 68, of Troutville, VA, passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 after an auto accident.
Gene was preceded in death by his father, Frederick E. Saunders Sr., mother, Martha C. Richardson, step-son, Jeffrey Martin and his beloved grandparents.
Gene is survived by his loving wife of 36 years Millie; his daughter, Cindy Clayton and her husband Jamie, his son, Jeff Saunders and his longtime girlfriend Tammie Aldridge; step sons, Chris Martin and Michael Martin; his six grandchildren, Brooke and Cori Clayton, Kristal Williams, Brittney Martin(Matthew Daily), Aaron Martin, and Michael Martin Jr, soon to be born great - granddaughter, Camilla Jo; his brother, Alan Saunders and his wife Connie; second son, Jerry Kerns.
Gene worked for over 30 years with the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). He was an International Representative. Also the President of Local Union 9177 for 4 terms. After retiring he was a member of Local 7086. Gene loved his work with the UMWA and was proud to represent all the hard working miners of America.
Gene loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren that he loved to brag on. He loved is friends, fishing, motorcycles and Lord Botetourt Football and Basketball. Gene will be remembered for his big heart, his love for life, and his willingness to help others without recognition.
The family would like to thank the Trauma team at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and the doctors and nurses in the Neuro Trauma ICU for the loving care they provided.
Gene's family will receive friends Sunday, October 22, 2017 from 1 - 3 PM at Oakey's North Chapel, 6732 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, VA. Where per his wishes, an informal prayer service will be held Monday, October 23, 2017 at 12 PM in Oakey's Chapel with sharing by family and friends. Interment Piedmont Cemetery, 3812 Alleghany Spring Road, Shawsville, VA.
