Events

Alfred Homer Harper, 93, of West Covina, CA, formerly of Beckley, WV passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 2, 2018 in Covina, California after a long illness.

Born in Keenan, WV, he was the son of the late Oliver C Harper Sr and Ada (Glover) Harper.

Alfred proudly served as a Sergeant in the United States Army during World War 2, spending time in Germany, Japan and the Philippines. He formerly taught mathematics at Trap Hill High School, Shady Springs High School and Woodrow Wilson High School. He worshiped with his family at the United Methodist Temple where he enjoyed singing in the chancel choir before moving to California. He joined the West Covina United Methodist Church in California with his daughter's family and continued singing in the church choir there.

Alfred had several pastimes throughout his life, spending his spare time as a football, baseball and basketball coach and referee. He was an avid gardener and started a Christmas tree farm in Abraham, WV when his children were young, taking them along to plant seedlings, shaping the trees as they grew each year. He sold Christmas trees for many decades in Beckley and Prosperity and was known for giving trees away for free when folks stopped by and could not pay.

Preceded in death by his loving wife, June (Peters) Harper, son Wesley Allen Harper, grandson Jordan Alexander Harper, brother Oliver Harper Jr., brother Joe Harper and nephew Douglas Wayne Harper.

He is survived by his children, Jeanette Gay Harper, Mark Edward Harper and wife Vickie Harper, Anita Sue Harper Chan and husband Clinton Chan; grandchildren, Kerry Elizabeth Harper, Jacquline Renee Harper, Wesley Harper Jr. and husband Gabe Owen, Amanda June Chan and Adam Jordan Chan, and great grandchildren, Joseph Harper and Shane Workman Jr., numerous nieces and nephews as well as countless former students and athletes.
